When people type certain keywords into a search engine and click on them you will start to develop organic traffic. The keywords you choose will directly impact the amount of traffic you will get. The more traffic you have on your website the higher your ranking will be in the search engines.

Keyword research is the process of finding and analyzing search terms that people are entering into search engines. This process should help with your content and marketing strategy.

Why is Keyword Research Important?

Keyword research is always going to be directly linked to your customers, they always come first. It tells you what topics they are searching and how popular they are. Researching topics that get a high volume of searches per month can give you an idea of what type of content you should create or at least appeal to.  

Keywords by Intent

User intent is basically what the searcher is searching for when they put the keywords into a search engine. You do not want to use a popular keyword without first thinking about the user’s intent. It’s not okay to deceive the users with content that doesn’t match the keywords you are using.  

Types of Keywords

Short-Tail Keywords

Keywords that are usually one to three words long, for example:


Guitar lessons

Guitar shops

Guitar picks

They can be found by using Google suggested search. Just enter one word and similar words and phrases should pop up.  

Long-Tail Keywords

Long-tail keywords are longer than 3 words and can be derived from short-tail keywords, for example:

Inexpensive guitar repair closest to me

Cheap guitar lessons in my area

It might look like they are too specific but rest assured if you go to Google and type in a word, there will be a lot a suggestions that are longer than three words. Long-tail words satisfy specific searcher intent and can be used to your advantage. Even so, short-tail keywords usually do have higher search volume than long-tail keywords.
